"Who Are You Meant to Be?" Still Life Painting

Still Life "Who Are You Meant to Be?"
Who Are You Meant to Be? (c) Mary Hubley
The color RED is the star of the show here. This little painting features a red apple and matching leaf, as if the red in the painting can't decide which shape it wants to take. The apple is in a gorgeous pottery bowl, something I've recently acquired from a little thrift store in town. Funny how I never even noticed thrift stores before I started painting lots of these little still life paintings!

I generally start a painting with the colors. I lay down the yellows and reds first, because if I wait, they'll become muddy as I add the shadows around them. Then I go for the strong darks and white whites, just to make sure I get contrasts correctly.

Genre: Still Life
