It's Complicated - A Still Life

Still life with Pine Cone by Mary Hubley
It's Complicated (c) Mary Hubley
This still life of a pine cone sitting on a dish with three little autumn leaves is quite simple.  A few objects. White background. What more could you read into it?

Yet, the meaning is not as clear as you'd think. Why would anyone want to eat a pine cone? It's on a dish, therefore it's something to eat, right? And what is that with those leaves that are left off the plate? If one can eat a pine cone, why not little leaves, which would probably be easier to chew? These are possible clues to a mystery. The meaning behind the meaning?

It's complicated.

Perhaps I'll explore the answers in future mystery paintings.
