Painting Trees

How to Paint Trees
Along the Path (c) Mary Hubley

How I've Approached Painting Trees

  1. Vary shapes. Trees are complex. Different shapes and sizes and colors, different scars on their trunks, turns to their branches, and colors in their leaves. Dig in deep when painting and catch those variations in shapes, sizes, colors, and lines.
  2. Capture light and shadows. To avoid a flat-looking tree, get the sunlight that streams in from above or from one side. Create light and shadow on the leaves and branches.
  3. Thick to Thin. Trees get smaller as they go up and out. Trunks get smaller and branches grow smalle, eventually ending in points and hidden by the leaves.
  4. Vary color. Use different leaf and bark colors. Add a bit of yellow to lighten or blue to darken. Magnolia leaves are purple underneath, while late summer maple leaves start to turn reds and golds.
  5. Observe. Paint from real observation rather than a photo. Photographs don't see proper shadow or color.
